Senior Backend Engineer, Workflow Engine
The workflow engine is the heart of worklist. Runs last from seconds to months, wait on payers and people, and move real money in systems we don't own. You'll design and build it in PHP and Laravel, with the guarantees that make it safe to trust: idempotent actions, receipts, clocks and proof for every step.
What you'll do
- Design and build the graph interpreter: runs, steps, waits, clocks and retries on Postgres and queues
- Make every external action safe: idempotency keys, receipts and verification against the system of record
- Build the modes (Automatic, Ask first, Human) and the rules that decide them at run time
- Write the tests that prove it, with Pest, and keep the documentation true as it changes
- Work directly with the founders and the first customers' billing teams
What you'll bring
- 5+ years building backend systems in PHP and Laravel, or a similar framework you can map from
- Experience with queues, long-running jobs and failure: retries, timeouts, at-least-once delivery
- Strong Postgres: schema design, transactions, locking and query plans
- A habit of small, well-tested units and clear written reasoning
Nice to have
- Workflow engines or orchestration (Temporal, Step Functions, n8n, Camunda)
- Healthcare or fintech systems where money and audit trails matter
About worklist
worklist runs healthcare operations as workflows, from intake to payment, and turns everything automation can't finish into structured work for a person. We're a small team building it carefully, starting with denial recovery for medical equipment suppliers.
