What is a TIN in medical billing?
The TIN identifies the business entity that gets paid. Payers pay claims to a TIN, usually an employer identification number, which must match the billing provider's enrollment.
Payment routing
| Entity | TIN | NPI |
|---|---|---|
| Example Family Medicine, clinic | **-***6789 | Its own NPI |
| Example Family Medicine, imaging center | **-***4321 | A second NPI |
- An MRI billed by the imaging center was paid to the clinic's TIN. The clinic holds money it doesn't own, and the imaging center's claim shows as unpaid.
Every claim names a billing provider with an NPI and a TIN. The payer sends the money to the account enrolled for that TIN, and reports it to the tax authorities under it.
When TINs cause problems
Groups with several entities, practices that changed ownership, and providers who moved between groups all risk payments landing under the wrong TIN. The money then looks like an unexplained credit in one place and an unpaid claim in another. Fixing it means asking the payer to reprocess, or returning the payment and waiting for the right one.
